Understanding the Symptoms of B12 Vitamin Deficiency

Most people are amazed at just how much a b12 vitamin deficiency can impact the body.  There are so many different possible medical symptoms and because everyone has their own genetic vulnerabilities, what each person experiences will be unique.  The truth is that vitamin b12 impacts every cell in your body.  It plays a key role in your nervous system function, as well as your blood, immune system and the formation of DNA.  Because of this, when you have low levels of B12 just about any part of your body can be impacted.

Very often, it is the nervous system that is attacked.  Low levels of B12 can cause demyelination, which is damage to the soft material called myelin that works to protect the nerve fibers.  This can lead to a host of neurological issues such as numb and tingling legs and arms, poor coordination and balance, impotence and a loss of vision.  As the damage to the myelin continues, a patient may experience a loss of memory, inability to think clearly, psychosis and dementia.  Vitamin b12 deficiency symptoms will also impact your immune system.  When you have low levels of this essential vitamin, your body is no longer able to produce sufficient white blood cells, which are necessary to fight disease. Gastrointestinal issues can also arise, because the body is incapable of replacing the intestinal lining as quickly as needed.

The good news is that while there are few diseases that can cause such a wide variety of symptoms, it is also one of the easiest and cheapest diseases to treat.  Of course, the first thing that needs to happen is that the appropriate tests must be run to determine if a deficiency in fact exists.  If it does, most of the time the recommendation is taking b12 shots. This is the quickest way to deliver high levels of vitamin b12 directly into the blood stream.
